Buenos Aires

We arrive in the morning at Buenos Aires.  Upon arrival,we are meet at the airport and take a transfer to the hotel. Later, we take a half-day city tour of the highlights of Buenos Aires. The tours initial stop is the city's historic center, Plaza de Mayo. This lovely plaza has flower gardens and tall palm trees, and is the scene of many of the city's historic political events. Surrounding the plaza are colonial buildings of interest: the Casa Rosada (seat of the executive branch of the government), and the Cabildo and its historic museum, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, which holds the tomb of General Jose de San Martin, the father of Argentine independence. The tour continues down the Avenida de Mayo to the National Congress. Avenida 9 de Julio, with its 8 lanes, is the widest avenue in the world. In the middle of this avenue is the Plaza de la Republica with an Obelisk rising as a symbol of the city. It was built in 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the city founding. Another landmark is the famous Colon Opera House, which brings the world's most notable singers and musicians. No tour would be complete without a visit to the picturesque La Boca district, the old port area that reflects its Italian heritage. We continue to San Telmo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. Originally a center for immigrant settlers, it is a neighborhood of colonial houses and cobblestone streets. The area also has a lively nightlife with many restaurants, bars, and tango houses. The tour passes the developing new district of Puerto Madero, continues through Palermo with its parks, gardens, and elegant residential area, to the sophisticated district of Recoleta, where we pass the famous Recoleta Cemetery with its ornate memorials, including the tomb of Eva Peron.

Today's Rio de Janeiro tour gives a different perspective of the city as we, along with our guide, take the cable cars to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain. From the peak, the entire cidade maravilhosa (marvelous city), coastline, and Atlantic Ocean spread out below us. After descending by cable car, we experience a driving tour of Rio de Janeiro's city center to see the famous Sambadrome, the Teatro Municipal, and the modern-styled Cathedral. Rio de Janeiro

This morning’s tour of Rio de Janeiro’s is of its most popular attraction – the 125-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain, standing over Rio de Janeiro. Begin the mountain ascent in a cogwheel train through the lush Tijuca Forest, a national park and the world's largest urban forest. Arrive at the base of the statue where we truly appreciate the size of one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The views from the observation platforms are spectacular and provide insight of how the city of Rio has grown around and up the seemingly inhospitable natural rock features along the coast. Rio spreads out below us, revealing Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches, the famous Maracana Stadium, and the luxurious Botafogo Bay. Additionally, it is impossible to ignore the favelas, Rio's hillside communities. This afternoon is free to relax on the beach, shop in Copacabana’s boutiques, or add additional activities such as boat or helicopter tours, a visit to a favela, samba lessons, etc.
