Packing Smart: Luggage Size & Weight Tips for Stress-Free Travel

by Wendy Fracchia

Packing for a trip can feel a little like a game of Tetris meets The Price is Right. Will it fit? Will it weigh too much? Will I actually wear those three pairs of shoes I packed “just in case”?

Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or heading out on your very first group tour, a little strategy when it comes to your luggage size and weight can save you headaches, extra fees, and backaches.

Here are a few helpful tips to keep you rolling smoothly:

🧳 Check Airline & Tour Guidelines First

Not all airlines are created equal when it comes to baggage allowances. Some international carriers offer generous checked bag limits, while others charge by the kilo. And if you’re traveling with one of our group tour, be sure to read the INSTRUCTION LETTER in your documents on what size luggage is recommended — especially if you’ll be moving by motorcoach, ferry, or regional flights with stricter limitations.

Pro tip: We always suggest a medium-sized suitcase (26–28 inches) and one carry-on.  Anything longer is going to push the weigh limits allowed and could end up costing you extra fees at the airport.

⚖️ Invest in a Luggage Scale

>Speaking of, there’s nothing worse than playing luggage roulette at the check-in counter. A portable digital luggage scale can help you stay within weight limits before you even leave home. It’s small, inexpensive, and worth its weight (pun intended) in gold.

👟 Pack for Versatility, Not Volume

Choose clothing you can mix and match, layer, and wear more than once. A neutral color palette with a couple of fun accessories goes a long way. And be honest — if you haven’t worn it in the last year, you probably won’t need it on this trip.

Bonus: Leave a little room for souvenirs and local market treasures you’re bound to pick up along the way!

✈️ Know What Belongs in Your Carry-On

Your essentials — medications, travel documents, a change of clothes, chargers, and a few toiletries — should always travel with you in your carry-on. Lost luggage happens, but being prepared means it won’t ruin your adventure.

Bottom line: Travel is about experiences, not stuff. It isn’t a fashion show.  Those you’re going to be traveling with will never know how old your jeans or shirts are, and  everyone you are traveling with in in the same boat with you!  Pack smart, travel lighter, and you’ll have a lot more fun (and fewer sore shoulders) along the way!
